The Story:
After the ups and downs yesterday, in terrain and in emotion, today was a more sedate day, the walk was short, very flat and often at little more than sea level (despite a trig point) and entirety pleasant. From Burnham Strolling Steve and I ambled, firstly by the sea along the extended town promenade and then inland to Highbridge which heralded our arrival with a spell of unexpected and persistent rain. It was enough for us to don the wet gear for the first time in a week but within 30 minutes it was over and the wet gear was off and back in the bags. The next few miles were surprisingly good for after the tracks we walked yesterday afternoon I expected neglect; there was none of it, all were well maintained and well signed. We continued on in good heart through the pretty villages of Alstone and Huntspill and then on a quiet road to Stretcholt, after which we stopped off at Yearsley Farm for a cup of tea. Strolling Steves wifes auntie lives there and invited us to call. After our farm tea we continued on pleasant, near deserted lanes to Pawlett via Pawlett Hill, a huge haul up to a trig point at 32m (yes, that high!) before joining the River Parrett Way for a walk along the mudiest river imaginable to Dunball. From there it was a short walk on the roadside path to north Bridgwater and our digs. All in all a pleasant day, nothing remarkable but not bad at all and a good gateway to the delights ahead.
