The Story:
After yesterdays super Lakeland departure with Tim todays section, almost entirely on the Dales Way was horrible and all because of a simple walking feature, the stile. There were simply too many of them, field after field and each encounter with one broke our stride. Result? A long arduous day. To add to the fatigue sapping hurdling the sun blazed down throughout. There was scant relief in small woodland sections that brought welcome relief. There is nothing much else to say about the stage other than two significant moments. The first was when my brother Dave joined us near the M6 crossing. His welcome company was a huge bonus to ease the hard work of walking today and Strolling Steve and I looked forward to his company over the coming days for the crossing of the Yorkshire Dales. The second moment was totally adverse to the rest of the walk. A WOW moment. On a detour from the Dales Way we were adjacent but higher than the Crook of Lune and lo and behold the south facing view of the Howgill Fells blew me away. I took photographs galore of the wonderful scene. In the brilliant blue sky the background was perfect. Just as well for when we reached Lincolns Bridge we had the tedious two mile tarmac trudge into Sedburgh. The Dales Way must be embarrassed by that boring section. Not the best day but Dave and the Howgill Fells saved it.
Strolling Steves Daily Statistics:
Scenery: 3/10 – Occasional bright spots in an otherwise uninspiring landscape.
History: 1/10 – I am glad it is.
Interest: 2/10 – Only if you have a low excitement threshold.
Track: 2/10 – Mostly easy walking but mediocre signposting means you should add 10% additional distance for walking in circles.
Comment: Is there really anything else to be said.
