The Story:

A couple of days ago Strolling Steve and I had the pleasure of meeting and walking with John Lister. Today we had the pleasure of meeting and walking with Tim Nobes. Furthermore as he was local to the area and knowledgeable about the paths and landscape I chose to invite him to plot the route we took and as a result we were not disappointed.

We set off from Rydal after spending a little time finding Tim who waited in Rydal Mount as we wandered up and down the road near Rydal Church. Once under way we walked through parkland to Ambleside where we stocked up with food and drink before heading south east toward Troutbeck and through some nice deciduous woodland to Jenkins Crag, a great viewpoint for looking over Lake Windermere. Thanks Tim, we would never have seen that fantastic view were if not for you. Tim also pointed out other great south east Lakeland viewpoints like Orrest Head and the grand house where seaplanes were designed during the last century. He continued to be a great guide as we made a poignant farewell to the Lake District, pointing out lots of interesting meadow flowers and naming them all. If only I could remember!

We followed lanes, tracks, bridleways and quiet roads from Troutbeck toward Staveley with sun being a constant companion and arrived thirsty so Tim took Strolling Steve and I to the Hawkshead Brewery for a welcome pint before we stocked up on provisions for a second wild camp. Tim wasn’t finished in helping us, recommending a great meadow which, on saying our farewell to a super new friend, we found and on pitching the tents we dived into the river for a wonderful outdoor bathe. What a fantastic day we had and all thanks to the advice and leadership of a fantastic new friend.

Strolling Steves Daily Statistics:

Scenery: 8/10 – Lakes, rivers and hills. Ticks most boxes.

History: 7/10 – Speed records and literary giants.

Interest: 8/10 – Always there.

Track: 7/10 – Good but the road sections are wearing.

Comment: Some outstanding scenery in the land of Beatrice Potter.
