The Story:

A nice days walking was had by the squire Walking Englishman and his page Strolling Steve. For the third day in a row they had no rain and unlike the others there was a nice breeze to accompany them through beautiful countryside. They began their journey by leaving Carlisle and were soon clear of urban streets and following the River Caldew upstream through lush green country, through quaint villages, past interesting old buildings including old mills, bishops castelled residences, manor houses, and through some of the best deciduous woodland.

The River Caldew was always near to the route, squire and page reassured by its calming presence. Toward the end of the walk on the approach to Caldbeck the Lakeland Hills loomed larger and Back of Skiddaw in particular which is to be crossed tomorrow. Before the journey continued though squire and page took refuge in the local inn to prepare for an upland day. While drinking the local ale they drunk in the satisfaction of a wonderful walking day. As they did so they were joined by Lady Gwen of Ennerdale and for the next hour they chatted and revelled heartily. Lady Gwen of Ennerdale had brought packhorse to move both squire and pages heavy load to Keswick town the next day. All were happy. The day ended well.
